The Essential Survey Statistician

With the increasing availability of large convenient data sets such as electronic medical records, sensor data, and social media information, and with the continued decline in response rates, some have wondered whether survey sampling will continue to play a role in producing data for society. I argue why the perspective and skills of survey statisticians are essential in the current data environment, and describe some current work and research problems for which sampling expertise and research are needed. The talk concludes by revisiting one of the most infamous samples in history.
